The Sundial at Stirling Castle: Where Shadow Reveals the Time

illusion sundial time Jun 18, 2026

A lot of people have reached out and asked me what this is and where I saw it, so I thought I would share.

This beautiful old stone piece was found in the gardens at Stirling Castle in Scotland. At first glance, it almost looks like a broken marker, a forgotten relic, or something that has simply been left behind by time. But it is actually part of an old sundial — a tool once used to tell time by the movement of the sun and the shadow it cast.

The small metal piece on the stone is called a gnomon. As the sun moved through the sky, the gnomon would cast a shadow across the carved lines and numbers, revealing the hour. Long before phones, watches, and the constant pressure of being late, people lived by a more natural rhythm. They watched the sun. They noticed the shadows. They understood the day by its light.

And there is something about that which feels deeply sacred to me.

A sundial does not work without the sun.

But it also does not work without the shadow.

That is what stopped me.

Because isn’t that so much like life?

We often think the light is the only thing that shows us the way. We chase clarity, certainty, answers, and illumination. But sometimes, it is the shadow that reveals where we REALLY are.

Sometimes, it is the contrast, the discomfort, the unknown, the old wounds, the hidden parts of ourselves, that show us the truth of the moment.

This old sundial reminded me that shadow is not something to fear.

Sometimes shadow is information.

Sometimes shadow is direction.

Sometimes shadow is the thing that tells us what time it is in our own lives.

There is also something humbling about standing in front of an object like this. It has watched centuries pass. It has stood through weather, kingdoms, footsteps, silence, endings, and beginnings. People came and went. Seasons changed. Lives unfolded. And still, this stone remained, holding its quiet conversation with the sun.

To me, it felt like a reminder that time is not just something we measure.

Time is something we are in relationship with.

There are seasons for expansion, seasons for stillness, seasons for grief, seasons for adventure, seasons for awakening, and seasons where we finally see what the shadow has been trying to show us all along.

Maybe that is why this piece spoke to me so deeply.

It was not just an old sundial in a castle garden.

It was a reminder.

The light gives life.

The shadow reveals truth.

And when we are aligned with both, we begin to understand exactly where we are.
